Dear RTL;

Following the broadcast of your report “Tous coach?” concerning professional coaching, and as the European Council of Coaching and Mentoring (EMCC), in this case "EMCC Belgium", we are requesting, in the same way as ICF by letter of October 25, 2021, a right of reply concerning points included in the appendix, as well as the distribution of details relating to professional coaching below.

It seems to us that the show overall gives an incomplete and biased image of professional coaching. Indeed, it mixes information from various sources coming mainly from advisers or organizations offering personal development activities. These stakeholders therefore have no proven direct link with coaching as a specific professional practice.

In order to rectify the inaccuracies observed and to present the reality of professional coaching in its entirety (its ethical and professional rules, the methods of its practice and the training and certification path to achieve this), we are making the following corrections and information :

EMCC Belgium aims for the recognition of the profession of coach at Belgian and European level, knowing that the profession of coach is spreading and demands more and more a requirement for quality, solid skills both technical and relational, ethics and professionalism.

As EMCC Belgium, our mission is to publicize the practice of professional coaching and the fact that this profession is organized by national and international federations. For Europe, the European Coaching and Mentoring Council (EMCC) has achieved recognition of self-regulation.

Three elements of this self-regulation are:

The commitment of practitioners to respect a code of ethics that is available to clients.

The fact that the titles that the coaches can carry are attributed exclusively by the federations, following a strict process which verifies that the applicant:

  • Has followed sufficient specific coaching training
  • Has demonstrated experience in the practice of professional coaching
  • Has passed the tests assessing their knowledge and ability to exercise the profession according to the skills defined by these federations.

That professional coaching training programs are approved, controlled and certified by these same federations.

Most of the people interviewed on this show do not meet these criteria, and few of them can refer to a universally recognized code of ethics.

The result is that the public may believe that the practice of professional coaching is accessible to everyone, without preparation or training, and that no guarantee can be made as to the professionalism of the practitioners.

However, there are more than 70,000 coaching professionals in the world, members of one or the other international federation, who are engaged in a process of continuous training, reflective practice and offer their clients guarantees of professionalism and protection of a clearly defined code of ethics. Despite this, most of the people featured on the show are not part of that community.

Finally, we would like to tell you that EMCC Belgium is an Association under Belgian law, member of EMCC Global with a European influence and that in this context, EMCC Belgium aims to promote, enhance, develop, by all means, the profession of mentoring and coaching and all related applications and disciplines, as an innovative and demanding professional practice, in an ethical, humanist and multicultural framework by offering its members a collaborative approach in terms of sharing, openness, reflection, development, research.

The Association aims to be the European association for the meeting and exchange of all coaching professionals whose objectives are:

  • To exchange
  • Communicate
  • Promote and inform
  • Carry out research, training, publication
  • Develop services
  • Defend the profession throughout Europe: by forming a community of mentors and professional coaches in the form of a network, which shares experiences and tools, establishes structures for supervision and intervention, maintains its level of competence and undertakes to supervise mentors and coaches who start their professional practice with respect for the profession.

Counting on your collaboration to rectify these inaccuracies, we remain at your disposal for any further information.
